Bee-Wise: Forage Like a Pollinator, Heal Like a Herbalist

Bee-Wise: Forage Like a Pollinator, Heal Like a Herbalist

Spring seems like it's finally arrived and the buds are out!

And yes — for those of you with sharp eyes, you may have noticed the label says 2025. We actually filmed this project last spring, but decided to release it now while the balsam poplar buds are once again waking up across the Aspen Parkland.

In this video, we head into the spring poplar patch to explore the sticky buds of Populus balsamifera. These fragrant buds have been used for generations in salves sometimes known as “Balm of Gilead,” a soothing topical remedy traditionally used for sore muscles, skin irritation, chest rubs, and more.

Along the way, we also explore the connection between poplar resin and honey bees, the history behind Tiger Balm, and how to make your own simple bush balm at home.

Have you ever worked with poplar buds? I'd love to hear how you use them!
